Crailsheim during the Nationalsocialism

Attitude towards the NSDAP

In the beginning of the 1920s Crailsheim was a little town and there was only a little number of National Socialists. On August 23rd, 1923 a propaganda march of members of the NSDAP took place. During this march the inhabitants obviously showed their dislike: they closed their windows and drew the curtains.

After the failed putsch in Munich on November 9th, 1923 the NSDAP was forbidden and later disbanded. Despite this disbandment the NSDAP members of Crailsheim founded a local group. Although this group was also disbanded after a short time it was reactivated in summer 1927.

In the "Landtagswahlen" ( federal elections) in 1928 the NSDAP achieved bad results: only 130 out of 10000 voters elected the NSDAP. In the community of Crailsheim the NSDAP was the weakest party. As a result of this local groups of various towns tried to make propaganda for the NSDAP.

But they saw difficulties in the influence of the Jewish inhabitants of Crailsheim. The reasons therefore were the high number of Jews owning flourishing shops. Nearly everyboby in Crailsheim had a Jewish friend.

But at the next elections, about 4 years later, the NSDAP achieved 40% of all votes.
